Dempsey

Our very special boy Dempsey died last Wednesday.  We had been noticing a rapid decline these past few months, but the end was still such a shock.  He just...died.  He was 13 and a half, 94 in human years, a good old age for a big dog and a wonderful life with us for 10 years.   We are both grieving so hard.

 I think most of you know about the tragedy Thursday night when Marchelle and Aaron's two-year-old pup Red drowned in the upper pond.  There are no words. We are under a winter storm warning through Thursday early morning.  Telluride is looking at a foot of new snow, and we're somewhere in the mix.  Totals keep changing.  That said, with our latest three day total of nine inches, we now have 61 inches for the season.  I went up snowshoeing Saturday and today, and it's the usual gorgeousness. from our living room after the storm passed heavy, moisture-laden snow

Lots of news

 There is a wildfire burning up Red Mountain Pass near the avalanche shed.  The highway is closed from Ouray to Ironton Park.  Not that I'm particularly worried about this fire, but it looks like it's going to be a long, hot summer, perfect for wildfires.  Mike and I are accumulating in one spot items we need to take on a moment's notice, important papers, meds, food for Dempsey, anything that is irreplaceable.   Scary stuff but the price we pay for living in paradise. Mineral Farms Lane has been graded and gravel spread.  There is more to come on the upper part of the road, but for now, it's so much more driveable.  Mike, the pothole man, is happy. Camp Bird Road is open past Engineer Pass, but last I heard, it is not open on the Telluride side.  That could have changed in the last few days. Rain, sweet rain

 For the past few days, we've had glorious rain.  It's done a lot to ease my extreme anxiety about our drought, but I have to admit I'd still rather not see any legal fires on Mineral Farms.  Those of us who are up here full time are hypervigilant about fire of any kind. Mike and I hiked the Silver Belle to Colorado Boy Mine trail last week.  I was desperate to get into the woods.  This seldom-used trail is accessed from Ironton and is a great place to be on a hot day.  It is mostly in the shade.  Ouray Trail Group has worked recently on this trail, removing some trees but mostly removing brush and making the trail more obvious. Pretty but invasive - pull them when you see them on trails. Colorado Boy mine - and below The South Rim fire is now 50 percent contained.  When Mike and I were coming home from Gunnison last Sunday, we were detoured off of Highway 50 near Cerro Pass because of a brush fire.  On our way home through Crawford, Hotchkis...
